Heavyweight High Design Flatware » But Is It Art?
Sambonet, an Italian company that produces hotel flatware, holloware and buffet pieces upholds a standard of skilled craftsmanship that is recognized not only by the foodservice industry but by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City; you can find three Sambonet pieces there on permanent display.
Sambonet's flair for modern oversize flatware designs has been recently capitalized upon by the Wynn Las Vegas, which selected the Olympe flatware pattern in nickel silver and the Gio Ponti flatware pattern in silver-plated stainless steel for its two Italian restaurants.
According to Andrea Vianello, VP at Sambonet USA, Olympe is the most upscale pattern in the Sambonet range, with a "beautiful modern, oversized design made with a copper/zinc/nickel alloy that allows for sharper design definition."
The Gio Ponti has a "clean, flat, square look and was designed in the 1930s by an Italian architect." Every piece is signed. "It's a trendy pattern now," says Vianello.
Vianello also reveals that its current hotel and restaurant best sellers are the everpopular highly designed flatware patterns, "but they have to carry weight."
Sambonet offers five different lines of restaurant and hotel holloware, buffetware and flatware of nearly 40 patterns. Every piece is designed together with F&B professionals and chefs to be striking and functional.
